TESTIMONIAL AND PURSE OF
SOVEREIGNS.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. At the public meeting convened by the Mayor to-night, a resolution was passed affirming tho desirability of recognising the Premier’s patriotic services to the Empire by a presentation of a testimonial and a purse of sovereigns. A committee was appointed to carry out this object.
GISBORNE COUNCIL TAKING ACTION.
At the meeting of the Borough Council last night a circular from Mr 11. lan .Sumson, secretary to the movement initiated in Auckland for a testimonial to the Premiei, was read In reply to Cr .Jones, the Mayor said that the circular was addressed to hill, as Mayor. Cr Jones said he thought the move meat should be taken up by the citizens generally, not by the Council. The Mayor said they all knew of
the activity displayed in other parts. Who would start tiie matter if the Council did not ? Cr Jones said that most other movements of the kind were taken up by the citizens generally and not by tlie Council. In Christchurch the meeting had been presided over by Bishop Julius, and in other places the movement had not been confined to the Council.
Cr Harding agreed with the Mayor hat (lie Council should take notice of be matter.
The Mayor said that the least they could do would he form a committee. It might he thought that they ohould invite the Premier to the district. If they die so he believed that the Premier would find means of coming.
Cr Jones agreed with the suggestion that a committee should be appointed with power to add to the number. It was resolved oil the motion of.the Mayor, that a committee of the whole Council consider as to whether any further steps he taken, the committee to have power to add to their number.
