SUICIDE OF A CLERK
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, l.irt night. Robert Talbot, a.clerk, took a dose of prussic acid to-day in a Turkish bath establishment. He expired very shortly afterwards. ALLEGED ARSON. At the Supreme Court, Alice Brown was acquitted of a charge of arson, concerning which a previous .jury had failed to agree. j PRISON ENQUIRY. At the prison enquiry, Wilson having refused to give evidence, Warder Murphy, against whom the charges were made, gave evidence, denying the allegations made, and his- statements were corroborated by three ex-prison-ers who hau been incarcerated at Point Halsweli. Mr Garney, gaoler, that every opportunity was given prisoners to bring complaints under his notice, but he had not received any complaint from Wilson. During the afternoon Mr .Jellicoe appeared, and explained that the statement which the Commissioner had refused to allow Wilson to read was in his (Mr Jellieoe’s) opinion as a lawyer within the scope of the commission. Eventually the document was read, with the exception of one paragraph. It advised Wilson that the enquiry was to be limited to a specific charge against Murphy, and was not a general enquiry into gaol administration. lie (Mr Jellicoe) considered a general investigation imperative. but lie would not, he said, he a parry to sucli farcical proceedings as arc contemplated by the Commissioner, and he advised Wilson not to do so either.
