The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, FEBRUARY 15, 1902. OUR VALENTINE.

Yesterday was St. .Valentine’s Day. A few years ago it would have been a time of sending missives to each other —some sentimental and some comic or even nasty, only that no one but a keenly sensitive person would be concerned about such tr lies. In these days we hear little about the sending of valentines, and such articles have almost gone out of print. These are days of commerce, and both the sentimental and humorous have very frequently to give place to the commercial. Gisborne has one association with St. Valentine’s Day that we all must hold in memory. It- Was on the day named, two years ago, that the first sod of our little rauway line was turned, and when flowery speeches in regard to the auspicious occasion were made by Ministers, who told a delighted people What a nice valentine the district was about to receive. In view of what has followed, was there not a slightly comic side to that valentine ? The works are now lying idle, and the grass that was not to be allowed to grow on it is showing 'up luxuriantly, in company with weeds. The St. Valentine’s Day of yesterday brought a reply from Ministers, just two years after the memorable ceremony, stating that the moderate requests of the public meeting that was held under the auspices of the Railway League would be considered. We hope that some day there will be better things in store for us all. In the meantime it is to hoped that the Railway League will keep the Government well supplied with reminders, even though it may take a fortnight to receive an acknowledgment that our representations will be “ carefully considered.”
