A QUESTION OF GRADING.

DISCUSSED BY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

(Per Press Association.) NAPIER, last night.

At the quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, held to-day, the question of the grading of butter came up for consideration. The Chamber bad approached the Minister of Agriculture with a request to have an inspector sent to Napier once a month during the season, as at present, owing to Napier not being a port of examination, the trade was driven into the hands of Wellington exporters who

handle the whole output of the Danne-

virke, Norsewood, and the Heretaunga factories, but as two new factories at Wairoa and Nuhaka had been arranged,

and would shortly be at work, there was a sufficiently large amount of produce to justify the Chamber in making the request. Jn reply the Minister informed the Chamber that the requisition to make Napier a grading port for dairy produce would lie considered, but it was

feared that the amount of produce at present offering was not sufficient to warrant the establishment of a cold store.

The Chairman said that the question of cold storage could easily be disposed of, as- Messrs Niven and Co. had ample accommodation at their Spit stores. The dairying industry was an increasing one, and something should be done to prevent all this trade going to Wellington. Norsewood produced a considerable quantity of butter, and he thought it was time that the people here interested themselves in some of these matters.

On the motion of Mr Menley, it was decided to inform the Minister that

there is cold storage accommodation here, and to ask that arrangements be made to send a grader here as required.
