GOVERNOR VISTS CHEVIOT.
By Tolegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, last night. His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by the Hon. Hill-Trevor, visited Cheviot yesterday. In the evening be was entertained at a social - Lord Ranfurly said he had had tho pleasure of travelling in the first passenger carriage that had ever gone along the new Waipara-Cbeviot line, He certainly did not see any great signs of present progress, but trusted it would not bo ,oflg before Cheviot was in better communication with Christchurch. Cheviot had shown thni land settlements could be a great success if they were 1111 * 10 hands of proper men. He liked to see a prosperous and contended people, and wished there were more Cheviots in New Zealand. The slanders of the foreign press were being fully answered by all His Majesty s colo nies! but in no place had they been more fully answered than in New Zealand. Five thousand men had volunteored in five days for the Ninth Contingent. New Zealand was chained to the Motherland by no chains. She was t bound simply by love and patriotism. These were stronger chains than could be forged by lawyers or Parliament.
