CONGREGATIONAL UNION
PROPOSED FEDERATION
(Per Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, last night.
At the Congregational Union a letter was read from the Congregational Union of Queensland, asking the Council to send a delegate to attend the special Jubilee gaiherings to be held in 1903. It was decided to send a delegate. A letter was read from the Congregationalists of West Australia on the question of the federation of the Congregationalists. On the suggestion of the Rev. H. W. Miller (one of the reference committee), it was decided to reply that the New Zealand Union are prepared to co-operate. The Rev. H. W. Miller moved that the following notice of motion be put on the agenda paper : That this Council recommends the various district committees to arrange that a ministerial deputation visit aided churches in their districts during each year, and that such visit shall be as early as possible after the annual meetings oi Union, and that the expenses oi such visit shall be a charge on- the district funds for the year. The motion carried. . . The question of organisation was discussed by,.the Congregational Union The Rev. J. S. Baker considered that organisation would not interfere with the liberty, so dear to Congregationalists, but it was forced upon them by the deplorable losses shown by statistics for the past ten yearsThere was absolute need of a closer union, and the solution of the trouble was, he believed, to be found in a united Congregational Church. They must federate, but must still preserve the principle and autonomy of each individual Church. , Mr Fowlds, M.H.R., said that he thought the Church must amend its methods in the direction of a better nreanisation. He attributed the decline to the want of more self-sacrifice among the laity. Country extension, he said, was also needed. After :urther discussion it was resolved that a committee of four he apnointed in Auckland, and two from X of the other districts, to consider and report on how to bring the Con gregational Churches into closer relationship. -
