Lieutenant L. May gar, of the Fifth Victorian Mounteds, has been awarded the Victoria Cross for saving a man by relinquishing his own horse and walking to cover at Grelhoutboom.

Lord Kitchener's broad front in the recent drive was nightly secured by entrenching two hundred men per mile. Troops patrolled outside the northern and southern blockhouse fines. Commandant Vandermerve and two hundred men were within the northerly end on the night of the sixth, which they attempted to traverse. Bending low in the saddles and riding amoDgst the cattle towards the trenches they encountered a hail of bullets. Thirty broke through the British, forty-three were captured, and seven wounded.

The enemy lost heavily. Major Crofton was amongst the killed. The British casualties totalled twentytwo.

Some of the captured waggons were' recovered.
