GISBORNE RACING CLUB'S SUM

MEK MEETING

Fink weather favored the Gisborne Racing Club for the first day of their summer meeting, which took place at the Bara racecourse yesterday. Iho attendant's was hardly up to the average, but speculation was nevertheless brisk, and duiing the day the sum of £2352 was passed through the totalisators, the latter being capably managed by Mr M. Martin and an efficient staff. The dividends were promptly declared, and paid without the slightest delay. Mr W. O. effect acted as totalisator steward. Mr E. Boland wielded the starter’s flag in a successful manner. There was a little delay in the first two races, but this was unavoidable owing to the restlessness of several of the horses. Mr J. E. Whitby was clerk of scales, and Mr A. Pritchard was clc-rk of course, whilst Captain Tucker officiated as judge, his decisions giving general satisfaction. An excellent lunch was provided by Mrs Erskine, who was untiring in her efioits to promote the pleasure of all her patrons. Afternoon tea was also provided by Mis

Erskine in the grandstand dining rooms. The Gisborne Rifles Band was present during the afternoon, and added consider* ably to the enjoyment of the meeting. The racing throughout the day was full of interest, and in nearly every case the kandicapper, Mr C. D. Bennett, had the winner well concealed.

When the horses were fairly into stride Argvll was in fruit, followed by Vathek, Tauhei, who was slow to move, being second to last, and Miner last. In this order they ran to the bend, where Tauhei moved up, whilst Vathek came back. Argyll and Rosiphele were first into the straight, Tauhei being third, and The Miner fourth. The Strowan gelding answered gamely to the call of Griffiths, and coming away in good style, lasted long enough to win by a bare half length from Tauhei, who, coming fast from the distance, gained second place from Rosiphele. The Miner was fourth, and Victoria Cross fifth. Timo I.IBV. Divs., £8 8s and 12s.

The field were bunched at the homo turn, but half-way down the straight Waihiroro drew out, and finishing gamely, won by a length from Tyuedalo. Time, 51 2-ssec. Divs., £23 Is and 14s. First Handicap Hurdles, H mile.

Argyle and Minervo were first away, with The Miner, Victoria Cross, and Tauhei in the order named. The field closed up as they ran to the home turn. Argyll was first into the straight, but gat e place to The Miner before the distance was roached. Tauhei came with a stroi g run in the last fifty yards, but could not get on terms with The Miner, who won by a bare neck. Time, 1.821. Divs., To lbs and 10s. A protest was entered against the winner on the grounds of inconsistent running, but after a lengthy inquiry by the stewards it was not sustained.
