AUCKLAND SPECIAL

MR CARROLL.

(Special to Times.) Auckland, last night. According to a special wire Mr Carroll

left for We hi., gt..n to-day to attP"*l a Native meeting at Otaki to discus he Maori Council's Act and Maori I. i Administration Act.

GISBORNE PV ,S.

Much speculation wo- mlgid in here over the races he'd ; G on. ■ to-day. STRONG Cu.aMEATS. •Tudge Conoll.v commented very strongly yesterday on the juries in the Supreme Court Costs. His Honor summed up, and after about an hour’s retirement, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. His Honor said, when the verdict was de-

livered : “ I had occasion during my summing up to observe that trial by jury was becoming a farce. I think this proves my words. A clearer case was never tried. It is really becoming ridiculous to try prisoners at all.” The prisouer was then discharged. Turning to the jury His Honor said : " And I wish I could discharge you also.”

DEATH FROM THIRST.

In reference to n Broken Hill telogram that C. F. Corrigan, aged 45, wool classer, native of New Zealand, was found dead on the Mount Browne track the other day, having perished from thirst, Corrigan was well-known in Broken Hill. It was at first anticipated that this must be J. Corrigan, late of Gisborne. He was a wool-classer at that place, and he is at present in Australia, but I learn that it is his brother, formerly of the bank in Balelutha.
