SPORTING.

TRAINING NOTES,

(Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. This morning was rather foggy and cold, and against fast times being recorded. IJjin Djin did two rounds,

the last with Glenaldale, at a useful pace. The former is sore. Glenogle

ran well over a mile in 1.45 2-5. Dundas, moving in fine style, did a mile and a quarter in 2.25 2-5, and

I must take a lot of beating for the I Midsummer Handicap. Cannie Chiel also is a dangerous candidate for that race, doing the last mile and a quarI ter of two rounds in 2.18 4-5. tllen-

I aldale was again employed and helped his companion over the last mile. Cora Linn did a nice gallop of live furlongs in J. 5. Whirlw nd beat Lady Lillian badly over six furlongs on the grass in 1.17 A, but the former got a good start. Calibre ran a mile and a furlong in 2.3, Battle Cry assisting in the last mile, 1.48. Welback was too ■good for Firebrand over six furlongs, in 1.131. Cameo did a useful mile, I Nance O’Neil assisting in the last six furlongs, 1.47. Good Spec did smart work over five furlongs. Pallas did a good half-mile. Others doing sound work were : Medius, Lady Medallist, King Stork, Aberlow, Heiress, Step I Dancer, Vandyke, Iluku, The Mote, Bealey, Oyster, White May, Antique, Dirk, Greek Maid, Romanoff. Fulmen arrived last night, and is looking well, but was not on the course this morning. Motor arrived this morning, and seems very fit.

TO-DAY’S RACES,

The Gisborne Racing Club commence their summer meeting to-day, the races being held at tho Park. This is ono of the I most popular meetings of the year, and as the day has every appearance of keeping fine tlicro should be a large attendance. A number of outside horses are engaged at the meeting, and the fields are such that some excellent racing should ensue. A largo number of visitors aro expected from Napier and Auckland, and with good racing the Club’s meeting should be a great success. All arrangements have been completed, and the first race is to start at noon. The Rifle Band has been engaged for the meeting, and its services should add considerably to the pleasure of those present. The system of paying on first and second horses will be adopted in all events where there are five or more starters, and this should tend to increase the amount put through the machine during the day.

NJTES AND ANTICIPATIONS,

[By Early Bihd.]

The programme opens with the Flying Handicap, for which there is a field of 10, Mr J. A. Harding’s Tauhei being the topweight. On the Castor mare’s Auckland running I could not possibly give her a chance, but from latest accounts I hear that sho is much improved and likely to run well. Red Lancer and Mongonui come next to the top-weight, having 9.6 and 9.0 to carry respectively. Neither is in the best form, although of the t.vo I prefer the chances of the Carbine mare. Minerve is nicely treated, and The Miner has been galloping well of late, but is a very erratic customer. Lady Raven can be relied upon to run a good race, as also can Rosiphele and Argyll. Victoria Cross has been performing well at Wairoa, and may bring off a surprise. Vathek carries the lowest weight in the race, but is hardly class enough for this event. I expect to see the numbers go up as follows— Tauhei or Argyll ... ... 1 Rosiphele ... ... ... 2 Lady Raven 3

The second race, tho Maiden Hack, is a post-entry event, and there will no doubt be a good field for this race. For the Hurdles, the six acceptors are expected to face the starter, and 'a good race should result. Tho top-weight Sylvanus, with 10.8, has a handy impost, and should take a power of beating. Rodara is likely to run well as also is Cronje. After Tirea’s performance at Wairoa, the Kaiwhaka gelding is sure to have a good following of backers, and should about win. The placed division should be : Tirea ... 1 Sylvanus ... ... ... 2 Cronje 3

There is a large field of sixteen for the First Hack Flat Handicap, and a great raco should be witnessed. Mr J. Clark’s Papatu heads the list with 9.8. 'lf the Crackshot gelding is in anything like his old form, he should tako a lot of beating. Geologist has 9.2 and Notoriety 8.0, the latter having perhaps the best of the deal. Ahititi, with 8.0, has proved himself very fast on the Park course, and should run a good race. Unique, Royal Flirt, Tryphena, and Paleface are also well treated. The placed division may be : Papatu 1 Paleface (or Notoriety) ... 2 Ahititi 3

The Summer Handicap has five acceptors : Materoa 9.3, Red Lancer 8.10, Wilson 7.7, Lady Raven 7.3, and Victoria Cross 6.12. Materoa is hardly at her best, and the race will have to be run to suit her to enable her to win. Red Lancer, from what I can hear, is not in great form, and the raco altogether is fairly open. Victoria Cross has shown good running at Wairoa, and, with the lioht weight of 6.12 may last long enough to win. Wilson and Lady Raven have also good chances. I shall venture the following :

Victoria Cross ... ... 1 Rod Lancer ... 2 Materoa 3 The Shorts Handicap has seven acceptors, and the winner may turn up in Notoriety, with Pourere and Bob as his nearest attendants. Another large field figures on the card for the Welter, Mr W. Sargent’s Tirea being top-weight with 12.4, followed by Mr J. Clark’s Paria (10.9) and Papatu (10.0). Either of the latter pair should, at tho weights, hold tho top-weight safe for the distance. Geologist is well in with 9 10, as also are Craftsman with 8.12 and Mechanic with 8.10. The trio to get into places should be—

Mr Clark’s seleotod 1 Craftsman 2 Mechanic 3 The Park Stakes, with a field of eleven, brings the day’s racing to a close. Tauhei has 9.6, Red Lancer 9.3, and Mongonui 8 12, and of the three Tauhoi is perhaps the best. The’ Miner (7.12) and Victoria Cross (7.0) are also well in. I expect to see them finish in the following order: —

.Red Lancer £ Tauhei £ Victoria Cross ° The following are the acceptances :

First Hurdles, 11- miles. Syivanus ... 10 8 Rodara ... 9 Tirea ... 9 Bob ... 9 8 0 Cronio ••• 9 9 Tcha ... 9 0 Flying Handicap, 6 furlongs. Tauhei ••• 9 8 Lady Raven < 9 Red Lancer 9 6 Rosiphele ... 7 9 Mongonui ... 9 0 Argyll... ... 1 6 Miner vc ... 8 o Victoria Cross 7 0 The Miner... 8 2 Vathek ... 6 10 Park Stakes, 7 furlongs. Tauhei ... 9 6 Argyll. - l 3 Red Lancer 9 3 Victoria Cross 7 0 Mongonui ... S 12 Minerve ... 8 2 Craftsman... 6 Vathek ... 6 12 9 The Miner... 7 12 Rosiphele ... 7 7 Geologist ... 6 9 Summer Handicap, 1J miles. Matoroa ... 9 3 Lady Raven 7 3 Red Lancer S 10 Wilson ... 7 7 Victoria Cross 6 12
