VICTORIA COLLEGE TROUBLE.
WELLINGTON TRYING TO FORE STALL NELSON.
(Special to Times.) Wellington, last night. A way out of tho difficulty which has been experienced in securing a site for tho Victoria University College has been found, and will probably be adopted. Tho Wellington Collego Governors own an endownment in Willis street which tho corporation is widening, but purchasing the necessary land from owners. Tho Government are willing to give tho corporation a strip of its endownment ten feet wide, and about 125 feet long without compensation, on condition that tho city gives tho Salaminca road reserve to tho Victoria College Council. Tho endownment is at present under leaso to Mr John Duthie, with about 23 years to run, but ho is willing to lot tho corporation take it and the uecossary portions of his proporty adjoining for the street widening scheme, on what appears to be reasonable terms. Tho City Council will consider tho proposal on Thursday. In view of Nelson’s offer it is considered expedient to settle the site question at onco. Otherwise the Collego may be lost to Wellington for ever.
