REFUTING SLANDERS.
MASS MEETING AT CAPETOWN. MAYOR SAYS THERE MUST BE DECISIVE VICTORY.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, Feb. 10. An enthusiastic mass meeting was held at Capetown, and resolutions repelling calumnies, vindicating the humanity of the troops, _ and expressing unwavering confidence in the British Government were carried. ’ The Mayor presided. He said that never must the conflict terminate except by decisive victory of arms or unconditional surrender. Mr Thomas Graham, Attorney-General, said that the calumnies were the result of an organised conspiracy, fed on the illgotten gains of a coterie expelled from the arena of the god of battles to the slums of Europe. Mr Oehorinbruch (a German settler and member of Parliament), Mr O’Reilly (Deputy-Mayor), MrTheophilus Schreiner, and Sir David Gill also spoke. German and Danish residents also hold meetings with a similar object. The Wesleyan Synod has passed a resolution denouncing the slanders.
