A private in ope of (ike divisions in the Orange River colony, according to the Daily Mail, says a man has been punished for having a packet of candles (or some small article) rolled within his blanket, the transport officer averring that such smuggling of forbidden articles would lead to overloaded waggons and a certain breakdown at the first drift. “ And yet,” writes the private, “ that same morning I saw with my own eyes a large cookingranee carried by four men placed on the wagons and six boxes containing the general's travelling fiower garden! Now, do not think for one moment that I disapprove of flowers—on the contrary, lam an ardent amateur when at home. But i do think that when men are literally starving a few boxes of biscuits should take the place of flowers and cookmgranges."
