FEDERATION.

BIG MEN FIRING POPGUNS AT

EACH OTHER

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright SYDNEY, Feb. 6. Mr Barton characterises Mr Philpps’ remarks on Federation as popgun criticisms calculated to scare nobody but himself. Before the referendum Mr Philpps posed as an ardent Federalist, but his action since tends to the conclusion that he never really understood what Federation was. Changes of a comprehensive character were always open to be accompanied by these irritations. The life of Federation solely depends upon the great public opinion. Mr PhiJpp retorts that he is sorry Mr Barton is so angry, but he knows very little about Queensland, and the pity of it was he would not learn.
