Chambers of Commerce.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. At the Chambers of Commerce Conference it was resolved, on the motion of Mr John Duthie, of Wellington, “That the subject of the unsatisfactory condition of the Australian bill-of-lading be brought under the attention of Government, with the view of inducing Parliament to adopt legislation on the lines of American law." On the motion of Mr C. Ellison, of Napier, (it was resolved “ That the various Chambers of Commerce throughout New Zealand be requested to further the interests of the London Chamber by reporting, with detailed particulars, all cases of pillaging of goods from over-sea coming under their notice.” Mr Vaile, of Auckland, delivered an address, in which he sought to show that, tried by business standards, the Government railways were a miserable commercial failure. It was proposed to hold over the paper for discussion, but eventually a decision was arrived at to thank Mr Vaile, and allow the matter to drop. The Conference will resume its sittings to-morrow morning.
