After a delay of an hour owing to the rain play was resumed, but sixteen minutes only elapsed when rain again came down heavily. Play was stopped till after lunch. The early morning rain had not affected the wicket, but the midday shower did the damage, the wicketplaying slow as the game progressed, and the ball bumping the bat. Garnett onlyadded eight when Poidcvin secured a catch at- point. Five wickets for 659. Braund was then associated with Quaife, the latter plodding along with his score. The Somerset man got in some hard strokes, raising twenty. Then Gregory caught him finely, from a low ball between mid-ou. Six for 690. A few runs later Quaife, who. had been at the wickets three hours aud fifty-seven minutes, gave Clarko a catch at flue leg. Seven for 695.

Jones and Lilley partnered, runs coming slowly, Lilley bringing the seventh century up, nine hours aud thirteen minutes haviug been occupied in its compilation.

Jones infused life momentarily into the scoring, but then his career was ended by Carter catching him at the wicket Eight for 719.

Poidevin usxt opened with a boundary. Trumper had a bit of luck at the hands of Jones at second slip. The chance was a difficult one. Gregory followed, and clever rungetting between the two ensued, Trumper timing Braund nicely and getting into the twenties. There were 50 up in fortytwo minutes. With 60 up, Jessop replaced Gunn. Off the fourth ball, Lilley caught Trumper —four for 67. Duff succeeded, but was dismissed in a remarkable way. The ball went past Braund’s hands at short-slip, but bounded high to Maclaren, who secured it—five for 75. Noble camo next. Gregory continued to knock up a single now and then.
