The Thames fruitgrowers who are interesting themselves in the establishment of fruit preserving works in the Thames township have decided to proceed with the formation of a company with a capital of £2OOO in 4000 shares of 10s each. A committee of four has been appointed to canvass the district in connection with the company. Hamilton had a novel visitor on Monday in the shape of a motor-car, which was en route to Rotorua, conveying thither Mr Humphreys Haines and Mrs Haines. Mr Henning, agent for the motors, accompanied them on a bicycle, which the motor towed. The party stayed at Cambridge on Monday night, and resumed their journey at an early hour next morning.—Auckland Star. The Kimberley correspondent of the Cape Argus reports a notable diamondswallowing exploit. A native named ' Ninepence, recently employed at the Premier mine, Wesselton, was charged at the Special Court with being in unlawful possession of seven rough and uncut diamonds, also with stealing the stones. From the evidence adduced, it was clear that the prisouer must have swallowed seven stones in three small parcels, the diamonds being wrapped in pieces of ragj The seven stones weighed seventeen and three-quarter carats, and were valued at .£92 15s. The prisoner was sentenced to four years’ hard labor. The State revenue from drink in the United Kingdom has increased from £30,000,000 in 1596 to £43,000,000 in 1901. The number of barrels of beer manufactured has grown from 33.000,000 to 36,000,000. The number of gallons of spirits paying duty has increased from 38,000,000 to 45,000,000, the increase being nearly 6,000,000 on home, while foreign have slightly deereased.
