NELSON JUBILEE.
A GREAT CI'.’LEBRA'J lON. A FEW MINOR ACCIDENTS. (Per Press Association.) NELSON, iast night. ■ The morning broke perLceUv for the celebration of the sixtieth anniversary' of Nelson, and the city looked wonderfully bright and gay, with ciowdsof people, and a profusion of hunting, etc. The decorations were extremely effective. At 8.30 the battery fired a salute. At 9 a commemoration service was held on the steps of Ca the Lai Hill, the Bishop leading, and Presbyterian and Methodist clergy' taking p,:rl The people commenced by singing “ All people that on eartli do dwe.i,’’ After the service, a procession took place in which the volunteers led. The Premier, Sir J. Ward, and the Hon. Mr Mills, with their ladies, the Mayor of Nelson, and all representative and official personages, the oid settlers in decorated carts and carriages, a bullock dray with settlors, the members of friendly societies, school children, were heartily cheered along the line of march to the Botanical Reserve, where speeches were delivered by the Premier, Sir J. Ward, Hon. Mr Mills, etc., all took part. The old settlers Mr Graham, M.H.R., Colonel Pitt, M.L.C., and the Mayor. The old settlers were then entertained at luncheon, to which 130, who arrived by 1843, were invited. The Premier, Sir J. Ward, and Hon. Mills 1
spoke in felicitous terms of the good, work done by the pioneers. The health of the old settlers was proposed by the Premier, and a hearty cheer was given in their honor.
At one the athletic and cycling sports commenced at Trafalgar Park, and a bowling tournament w.is begun. The Premier, Sir J. Ward, and Hon. Mr Mills are now being entertamed at a banquet.
During the evening the streets were crowded, the torchlight procession of the fire brigade and display of fireworks under the auspices of the Jubilee Committee drawing a big attenancc. The warships threw ibe searchlight on the sorrounding hills, giving a fine effect. The weather at present isihrmatening. At howling the Palmerston North rink beat the local players, hut the tournament does not commence »ntil to-morrow.
There was a record attendance at the sports this afternoon. There w.fre several minor accidents among the; cyclists.. Watson, of Christchurch, and Bradley, of Wellington, fi-tl in the final Jubilee wheel race, through a tyre exploding. Both were shaken, and not able to compete further. The following are the outside winners of the cycling events :—M>;-. trass, Wellington, cash mile Juuilec wheel rate and cash three miles ; 80/’e, of Christchurch, amateur mile championship, three mile handicap, anu dead heat with Whitefield in two miles. Running : Morris, cash, 100 yards and 200 yards.
