Exception is taken to a cable sent byMr Barton on January 3rd to Mr Chamberlain to the effect that he personally was informed that if proper facilities were available for Australian firms to tender, a direct offer would bo made to supply 3000 tons of mutton and beef monthly, at 5 7-Bd, ex store, discharging at three ports in South Africa. A Victorian firm in London had tendered, including distribution, at the price Mr Barton mentioned as ex store. Fremantle, JaD. 30. Arrived, Arcadia, from London. Passengers for New Zealand : Messrs Jones, Stevenson, and Lucas. Melbourne, Jan. 30. Young, Maynard, and Coutie represent Victoria at the Swimming Championship Meeting at Wanganui. Sydney, Jan. 30. A constable is being despatched to identify the Cingalese arrested at Auekland.
Victoria made a charge of 3 per cent, on the payments to returned soldiers or their wives, and Queensland did tho same. Mr Philp states that at first no commission was charged, but the Government were advised that the Now South Wales authorities were insisting on a commission, and were recommended to follow suit.
