RIFLE MATCH.
By Telegraph—Press Assooiation.
New Plymouth, last night. At a rifle match to-day on the looa! range, between a team of eight men from the Taranaki Rifles and a similar number picked from the rest of the companies in the Taranaki battalion, some td.ll shooting was recorded. The ranges were 300, 500, and 600 yards, and the Rifles made 730 against 695 compiled by the rest of the battalion, the former thus winning by 35. For the winners, Color-Sergeant O’Key made 100, out of a possible 105 ; Captain O’Key (ex-champion), 99 ; Corporal Armitage, 96. Two others were also above 90, and the team’s average was 91.25. For the battalion team, Capt. Taunton 94, and Sergt. Messenger 90 (both Taranaki Guards), and Colour-Sergeant Wells (Elthain Rifles) 92, were the best, the team averaging 86'8. The weather was dull, but otherwise perfect, and it is considered pretty near a record for the colony in similar contests. Capt. Okey, Capt. Taunton, and Corp. Armitage all put on the possible at five hundred. Color-Sergeant Okey has now, in eight consecutive shootings at three, five, and six hundred yards, an average of 95 out of a possible 105.
