GENERAL CABLES.

The salvors of the Gorman-Australian steamer Offenbach, which recently grounded at Amsterdam, claim £16,800 from the vessel and cargo. The Daily Chronicle’s New York correspondent states that Great Britain avowed her intention to use other means than diplomacy to prevent coalition during the United Siates-Spanish war. It is understood that the War Office maximum monthly requirements of frozen meat for South Africa is thirty thousand quarters of beef and twelve thousand sheep. This represents three fifths of the whole contract. The remaining two-fifths will be live stock. The military authorities in South Africa some time ago forwarded direct to Messrs Philip (Queensland) and Seddon lender form's and specifications of a contract. The War Office early in January sent forms to the AgentsGeneral, and then, at Mr Copeland’s urgent instance, asked Mr Philip to supply New South Wales and Victoria with forms. Mr Copeland submitted a tender for three thousand tons of frcr.en beef and mutton monthly for a year at 4d, delivered in South Africa, sufficient to supply two hundred and twenty thousand troops with one pound of meat per day, independently of a second tender of twenty thousand sheep at 3Jd, spread over six or twelve months. Three Victorian tenders were •submitted, one for half a million pounds of mutton or fifty thousand monthly at 3id, another for twentyfour thousand quarters of beef and twenty-four thousand sheep at 3-Jd ; while a third offered three hundred thousand pounds of beef at 4Ad and half a million pounds of mutton” at 3d delivered monthly.

The Manchester Guardian states that Mr See, Premier of New South Wales, on behalf of that State, charged 3 per cent, commission on all amounts New South Wales was paid on Imperial account during the war, and that- fric-, hi on arose because the War Cilice disallowed the charge, Mr Chamberlain advising the War Office to pay. It was recaptured after some difficulty near the Proprietary Mine office.
