The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, JANUARY 29, 1902. THE RAILWAY.

There is now no room for question as to what is being done in regard to the local railway works. The intention of the Government clearly is that the works are to cease. That is confirmed by Mr Carroll, who makes the qualification that the stoppage is omy temporary, as the grant made by Parliament has been spent. In the past the people of this district have had much to complain at the slow progress that has been made, but it was always explained tnat soon the work would be completed, and therefore it was wise to exercise patience. The prospect is now one that should cause the public to give full vent to their indignation at the way the district is being treated, and there will naturally he considerable astonishment at the apparently weak part our member has been playing in this matter. A short time ago there were many denials as to the wholesale discharges of men on the railway works ; the denials and counter -charges were such that the public bardic hardly knew what to believe. But there is now plain enough proof ip the case of our own district. A work that has been dragging its weaty length along as if there were no anxiety whether or not it were finished during the life-time of those who were present at the turning of tiie sod is now to he hung up while Ministers run round the colony boasting a quarter of a million surplus, and while there is much talk of a jaunt Home to the Coronation festivities. The Government have not done so much for us but they can surely let us have our little bit of a railway heroic the children grow up to he old men and women. We hear a lot about the progressiveuess of the Government —bat it lias not been found to be well borne out in practice. Perhaps we arc not strong enough to command our rights, but we can at least show thfe Government that we will not remain silent under tjie unjust treatment extended to us, and for that'reason it is phasing to note that the Railway League is taking such prompt action in the matter.
