NAPIER SPECIAL.

SENSATIONAL RUNAWAY

(Special to Times.)

Napier, last night,

A sensational incident occurred at 4 o’clock this afternoon. The horses attached to the Meanee coach took fright in Hastings street, and, bolting, collided with the large arc lamp in the middle of the ruaiu thoroughfure, near the Masonic Hotol. The force of the impact broke the cast-iron lamp post short off at the ground, which, in falling, struck one horse, breaking two of tho animal’s legs. A passing butcher ended its misery by cutting its throat. In falling, the major portion of the lamp was, by force of the concussion, thrown backwards, and landed on top of the coach. Except for the loss of the horse, no serious damage was done to the vehicle or the gear, but. the lamp was irretrievably smashed. No person was injured. The driver was temporarily absent from the coach when the horses started. NEW WOOLLEN MILLS.

The new woollen mills are expected to bo in full swing by tho first week in March. Tho buildings are almost completed, and the plant and machinery are going up rapidly. Tho Company have been making large purchases of wool at the local sales. EXPORT OF SHEEP.

Very large exports of sheep from Hawke’s Bay to Lyttelton have been made during tho past month. To-day, another big shipment was sent aw'ay, and, no doubt, will be duly slaughtered, aud sold in tho Home market as “best Canterbury mutton.”
