The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, JANUARY 28, 1902. RAILWAY WORKS.
We sincerely hope that the iutonnaticn received in regard to the railway woiks may not he so had as 011 the face of it appears to he the case. It is stated that all hands on the railway are to he discharged on Friday next, which would mean that the line whfch has taken so long in construction would he for a much longer period in the uncompleted stage. It is prenature, perhaps, to say much until something more definite has been heard as b the intention of the Government Only yesterday we had a long telegraphed report of Sir Joseph Wart’s speech as to what good things were to he done for the West Coast, but we hope that this district is not for ever to remain content with the crunbs. A great deal has been heard as t> the intentions in regard to our railvay, and certainly even the opponent of the Government probably an-, ticipiled something better than the disclarging of all hands- and the conseuent stoppage of the works. Wliei in the district a few days ago Mr far roll never gave as mucli as a hint of any intention to slow down with the work, indeed the promises have always been that the first section would'be opened ere this.
