WANGANUI, last night. The accident is in no way due to carelessness of the staff. WELLINGTON, last night. The Chief Justice to-day dealt with Wo cases of persons who had pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court. P. G. Morton, charged with the forgery of a promissory note at Masterton, was admitted to probation for three months. Morgan Evans, who had obtained a sum of £45 from a Palmerston hotel keeper on misrepresentation that he was a remittance man, received a nominal sentence of 14 days, and the Court commented severely on the action of the hotelkeeper in making the advance.
Leonard Jacob Inglis, of the Eighth Contingent, and formerly of the Fifth appeared at the Magistrate’s Couit to-day on a charge of having assaulted two Chinamen, one of whom is now in a serious condition at the hospital. Accused was remanded on his captain’s bail until to-morrow.
