WRECK OF THE ALEXANDRA.

PRELIMINARY ENQUIRY

(Per Press Association.) \ Westport, last night. The preliminary enquiry into the stranding of the barque Alexandra was held before Mr H. R- Spence, Collector of Customs, this evening. Peter Anhersen, master oi the Alexandra, said the vessel’s position was fixed by observation at noon nil briday, the 17th, at 41.4 S. hit., 168.1)6 East long. About 3.20 a.m. on Saturday the ship’s position by dead reckoning was 34.34 S. lat., and .71. H E long., and should have been within the circumference of the Cape Fonlwind light when all at once the captain saw a high bank ahead. He gave orders to brail in the spanker, and put the helm hard up. The ship fell away willingly, but immediately afterwards ran in amongst the rocks and up on to the beach. In answer to further questions the captain said he wore the ship because the vessel would not stay when iii ballast. In the run across he did not take the current into consideration From the two courses pricked off on the chart, he could only give it as his opinion that the current must have been the cause of putting the ship about one point out oi the course, E. -} S., set by him. Evidence, mainly corroborative of that given bv the master, was given by the first and second mates, deck boy, and sailmaker.
