CRICKET.
VICTORIA v. NEW SOOTH WALES.
By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright Sydney, Jan. 25. Interest was added to tho inter-Stato cricket match through the inclusion in both teams of a number of colts to fill the places of the veterans engaged in the test match at Adelaide, thoy not being able to get back in time. New South Wales in tho first innings made 327, C. Gregory 60, Hopkins 117, Farqubar 35, Poidevin 82, Pito 13, Kermode 7, Moars, Carter, Clarke, Mcßeath. and Cotter making ducks ; extras 13. Sydney, Jan. 26. In the inter-State match Saunders took six wickets for 57, Laver two for 88, Collins nil for 62, Worrall nil for 19. Victoria in their first innings lost no wickets for 13, Worrall not out 2, McMichael not out 11.
The partnership of Hopkins and Gregory gave the most brilliant batting record in intercolonial matches for the rapidity of scoring. Hopkins reached a century in 99 minutes, and made twenty-threo fourers. The third century was registered for three hours and ten minutes’ play. After Poidevin’s dismissal five wickets fell for ducks. ENGLISHMEN v. COUNTRY SIXTEEN. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, Jan. 26. The Englishmen commenced a match against sixteen country players on the Melbourne Ground. The Englishmen in their first innings lost six wickets f0r;377. The principal scores were: Hayward 57, Jones 47, Jessop 46, McGahey 49, Quaife 91. By Telegraph.—Pross Association. Christchurch, last night. The weather was porfoct for cricket yesterday. In the Cup matches Midlands declared their innings closed for 400, with nine wickets down (Garrard, notout, 126). Lancastor Park made 246 (Orchard, not out, 71„ and the match was drawn. SATURDAY COMPETITION. County wen tho choice of wickets, and made tho fatal mistake of playing on No. I. pitch, which was fast and fiery, and suited the West End trundlers. City and tried conclusions on No. II wicket. This is a batsman's wicket, and the teams unfortunate enough to lose tho toss prepare themselves for a day’s leatherhunting. The scoring has been moro consistent on this wicket, and it is difficult to see why No. 1 should get the preference. Saturday was an ideal day for cricketers, and it was disappointing to see such a poor attendance of players and spectators. WEST END V. COUNTY.
County sent West End to the wickets, and took the field five men short of the complement. J. and W. Andrews faced the bowling of Raymond and Barton. Barton, bowling to tho road, got up nastily and came off tho pitch with a speed that fairly bewildered the batsman. Raymond from the other end broke from either side, sending in an occasional fast one. Both batsmen played cautiously, and runs came slowly. With 7 up Raymond bowled W. Andrews. Hodge filled the vacancy, but was completely at sea to Barton. Raymond was getting a lot of work on the ball, and beat J. Andrews with a fine break ; two wickets for 12. Hodge went out to Barton, and was given out lbw. Dodd was cleanbowled by the same bowler. McConnell made five in two hits, and gave Barton an easy catch at third man. Cumming returned a high one to Raymond without scoring. Hood made two and was beaten by Barton. Swain, Crone, Featon, and Nasmith failed to score, and the innings closed for 24. Barton took five wickets for 6 runs, and Raymond five for 14.
§ (Raymond and Johnstone went in to knock off the two dozen runs that stood betwoen them and victory. But here the glorious uncertainty of tho game was once more exemplified. The County men could do nothing against the bowling of Hood, and McConnell. Disaster followed hot foot upon disaster, and, batting seven men, the champion club were disposed of
for 10 runs, the smallest total ever made in a local inter-club match. McConnell took four wickets for 5 runs, and Hood two for 5. The tall left-hander broke back alarmingly at times, while McConnell kept a fine length, and got a lot of pace on. Scoring was faster in West End’s second venture. Tlio innings totalled 84, of which Hodge claimed 29 and McConnell 13. Barton and Raymond again shared the bowling honors. Re-
quiring 99 runs to win, and with 40 minutes left for play, County again went to the wickets, but were all disposed of for 47 runs. Dods (13) and Sharp (10) were the only men toreach double figures.
