THE GISBOENB TIMES, SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 1902.

TO THE RATEPAYERS OF GISBORNE. y tAUIES AND GENTLEMEN,— We most heartil y thank all those who assisted ou >' efforts last Wednesday in order t '■ negative a Poll being carried lor wha j. we consider and believe to be both doubtful and unwise water and drain 2 age scheme ; and, although beaten b; a large majority, we venture to thin! 1 time will fully justify and prove th< 1 truth and prudence of the opposition. We unhesitatingly say that the statements made by Mr Mestayer and t Major Winter regarding the absence of > slips and the sound nature of the ground where the dam is to be, we ; and others believe to be most misleading and untrue, and it is a matter of no small gratification to us to find the Gisborne Times reporter speaking the truth of what he saw, and so justifying our statements in that respect. It "requires no engineering mind to see this, and 'in all fairness we still ask all who can and have not seen the country where the dam is to be, to go and see for themselves and form their own conclusions. Regarding the fight itself, we unhesitatingly say that the best of good humor and friendship has existed right through between all the other Councillors and ourselves, and it has been a pleasure to us to at all times meet our brother Councillors in the cordial spirit that has existed. We have understood their position, and they ours, from the start. They took Mr Mestaycr’s word and report without doubt or question ; we on our side doubted and questioned both. We have done our best to show up

the weak anti doubtful points ; they, have done their best to make out there were none.

Apart from the Councillors themselves, we tlo not acknowledge that there has been a straight-out fair fight. We regret this very much. We have endeavored in every respect to fight fairly and speak the truth, and give the facts so far as we were able, but there have been some on the other side who, we are aware, have gone to no small amount of trouble to distort the facts and keep back information from the ratepayers which would prejudice the success of the poll. We desire to particularly thank the proprietors of the Gisborne Times for the fair and ’impartial position they took up in the concluding part of the contest, and particularly so for their not having added misleading editorial notes to the foot of the correspondence, whether for or against the scheme, and also for the straight and plain report of what their reporter? saw at the site of the dam. i A word seems necessary to explain why Mr Lysnar did not respond to the good - humored request of the gathering to address them after the declaration of the Poll. Shortly before tlie declaration of the Poll we had been left by two of the Councillors finishing a good dinner in the Masonic Hotel, and not anticipating the Poll being declared so soon wej did not hurry out. When we did, the Poll had been declared and the speechifying had been going on for some time, for Mr Bright was just concluding his remarks. After that the Band was asked to play “ British Pluck,”'/ and we thinking all speechifying was over, moved up the street with others discussing the peculiarities of mankind, and quite ignorant of what went on afterwards. " i We are, etc., J. WI-lINRAY. W. DOUGLAS LYSNAR.
