ROWING.
POVERTY BAY ROWING CLUB. There was a large crowd of spectator at the various points of vantage to witnes the final of the above Club’s double ecu. ling handicaps, for which Mr A. Wes donated a handsome pair of carve walking-sticks. The evening was a: ideal one for a boat race, there being full tide and smooth water. The contest ing crews were R. Kellett and T. Nichol son and J. Pool and C. Boyle. Botl crews were on the 3-seconds mark From a-good start, Pool and Boyle soot had a lead of half-a-lengtb, which thei still held passing the footbridge. Hen Kellet and Nicholson spurted, and at tbf bathing-shed were on level terms. Thi crews were rowing splendidly, both having settled down to their work in real earnest. At Barton’s jetty, Kc-llet had an advantage of half-a-length, but Poo), spurting in fine style, got on level terms a hundred yards from the pest, and one of the most exciting races seen on the river resulted in Kellett and . Nicholson winning by barely two feet. Cheers were given for both the winning and losing crews, and then three cheers were called for Mr West, and were heartily given by the large number of spectators assembled at the shed.
Entries are now being received for another series of double sculling races to be rowed off in about three weeks' time, for which Mr H. R. Smith has presented a handsome pair of medals. Entries close with the Secretary this evening,
