BOWLING TOURNAMENT.
V GISBORNE VICTORY. EX 'ITING GAME. U 1 (Special to Times.) Wellington, last night. Heavy rain interfered with play at the j bowling tournament to-day, and the first round of matches did not start until after eleven o’clock. Gisborne defeated Car- ' ’ terton by several points in each rink,-and ® lost to Mount Eden by three points. The 0 £ concluding match of the day was against J 0 Newtown, who were well to the front for . tho banner. Ponsford’s rink was defeated by eleven points, and on the twentieth head Coleman’s rink had a lead of seven, requiring four to tie. The Gisborne men le were set a severe task. When the third |C * player came on Newtown was lying two, y . and thex-e appeared little chance of drawr t mg the Jack. With his first shot Gaudin attempted to trail the jack, and just missed. Coleman then asked for a draw j’r to save the head, but the skip was prevailed upon to allow a second attempt a;.;i run the jack, which came off beautifully. Gisborne lying two, Coleman was ’ then asked to run the jack a further foot with a square composed of | four Gisborne bowls. With his first shot he sueceedol, and the Newtown skip, failed to draw. Coleman had an open draw for last shot, but failed owing to the j darkness. There was great excitement e _ when the Newtown skip again failed, and the game resulted in a draw. Although nl it was now after eight, and quite dark, the a teams had to play an extra head. Much m to the amusement of the great crowd of )n spectators who had assembled, the Gisborne men had all the best of the last head, and scored five points in the two rinks, tho game concluding at a quarter to nine. The winners were heartily conQ _ gratulated on their victory, and were n _ warmly’ cheered by the crowd as they left ie the green. y Mr W.
