The police returns show an increase of 72 cases of drunkenness in the East Coast police district during the year, the figures being 568. as against 491. Wellington, last night. The Agricultural Department has ascertained that the mortality among sheep at Lovell’s Flat, Otago, was due to overfeeding on new grass, which sprang up after the long spell of dry weather. Colonel Babington, the new Commandant of the Forces, will reach Wellington from Sydney by the Monowai to-morrow. The Premier states that the troopships Surrey and Cornwall will leave the colony 7 together wfth the Eighth Contingent, and the date of their departure will not be fixed until the arrival of the Cornwall. Dunedin, last night. The yield of gold from the Glenrock mine, Macetown, for 1901 was 13300 z., valued at £5300.
The Port Chalmers Borough Council have unanimously adopted an antiGerman resolution, and placed on record their admiration of the firm and dignified attitude of the Imperial Government in reference to the South African war.
