FATAL ACCIDENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, last night. A lad darned Charles Andrews, agod 16, residing at Halswell, fell into a ditch on Thursday evening and injurod himself internally. He died in tho hospital this morning, his liver having been rupturod. A verdict of accidental death was returned. FARMERS’ UNION. At the Farmers’ Union yesterday afternoon it was resolved to take steps to hold a conference of local bodies to consider tho small birds nuisance. Mr Lambie said that in eonsoquenco of the rise in wagos, due to trades unions, farmers’ employees were flocking to the towns. Ho moved that this executive of the North Canterbury Farmers’ Union recommonds tbo Colonial Council to take evory possible means of urging the claims of agricultural workers on tho various branches of tho union, with the view of having their wages increased and their hours of labor shortened so as to be moro on an equality with town workers. The motion was carried. Some discussion took place as to tho advisability of tho union undertaking tho insurance of the fire risks of its members, but tho general opinion was that it was desirable first to ascertain what concessions tho existing companies had to make. It was resolved to recommend the Minister of Agriculture to enforce tho Small Birds Nuisanco Act of 1891 in all town districts, boroughs, and road board districts. CRICKET. In senior cricket, Midland v. Lancaster Park, the former remained at the wickets all the afternoon, being dismissed just on call of time for 355 ; Garrard 106 (not out), Strong 69. United defeated Sydenham and Addington by an innings and 11 runs.
