ACCIDENT ON RAILWAY LINE.
GIG SMASHED AND TWO MEN SERIOUSLY INJURED.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, last night. A serious accident occurred yesterday evening as the 5 p.m. train from Hastings to Napier was travelling between Hastings and Tomoana. About half-way between the two places there is a private crossing, which is protected by a gate on each side of the line. As the train approached this spot a light gig, in which were two men, named Thompson and Lourdon, and a boy, attempted to cross the line, with the result that the train crashed into the vehicle, smashing the gig, killing the horse, and injuring the two men rather severely. The boy escaped with slight bruises. The train was at once stopped, and the injured men were brought to town and taken to the hospital,Where it was found that Thompson was suffering from a fractured thigh, and Lourdon from severe bruises on the chest. It is not anticipated, however, that any serious results will ensue. The two men are butchers. It Is difficult to understand how the accident can have happened unless through carelessness on the men’s part, or from the horse becoming frightened and jibbing, for the line at the spot where the accident took place runs quite straight, and the approach of the train can be seen a long way off. The railway authorities rendered every i possible assistance, and the men were made as comfortable as they could be under the circumstances. |
