THE THIRD TEST MATCH. ENGLISHMEN HAVE 5 WICKETS DOWN FOR 266.

By Telegraph. Press Association. Copyright Adelaide, Jan. 17. The third test umteh, England v. Australia, commenced to-day. The rain wtiieii threatened on Friday cleared completely. and the weather was delightful. The attendance was ..nine thousand, including I.oid and Lady Tennyson.

Maclaren, the English captain, won the toss.

Mnclaren and Hayward faced Trmnble and McLeod. Both batsmen played cautiously. The first ten runs took twenty miuutcs. Then the scoring gradually got fast, chiefly at the expense of Trumble, who was trying to tempt Hayward. Noble and Howell wero then tried. Off the former Maclaren made a bad stroko, which he dropped safely behind square leg. Tho wicket was slower than usual; consequently it was easy, aud the bowling was lacking in ‘‘devil.” Howell’s off-breaks gave the batsmen some trouble, two or three times beating them, and tho stumps too. Armstrong and Trumper tried ineffectually before luncheon, when tho total was 68, each batsmen having scored forty-three. Armstrong and Howell resumed bowling. Off the former’s third over Hayward got 10 in three hits, making the total 100 in that number of minutes. At 110 Trumble relieved Howell. After three runs from the latter, Maclaren, whon 51, was bowled by Armstrong with a no-ball, but the batsman did not know it, for ho was walking away when ho was called back.

Hayward forged ahead, tho captain and tho Surrey nlnn making fine strokes all round. Some of Maclaron’s wero not quite so certain. At 126 McLeod relieved Armstrong, but tho runs now camo rapidly, 'although the fielding was smart.

At 149 Maclaren hesitated about running for his own stroke to third man, and tho hesitation cost him his wicket. Ho batted for two hours and a quarter, giving no chances. Tho score included seven fours.

Tyldeslej- pottered about for a quarter of an hour, tried to bit, and skied the ball back to Trumble. Two wickets for 164.

Later Hayward rather ingloriously ended a fine innings by slogging at a ball from Noble, which he just touched. It rebounded from the wicketkeeper’s hands, and as the batsman was out of his ground be was run out. Ho played a perfect innings of two hours and fifty minutos. He hit eleven fourers.

At 171 Jcssop ballooned a ball. Trumper, at long-off, judged the catch perfectly.

The tea adjournment was then taken, Quaife being 10. Lilley joined Quaife after tea, Trumper and Noble bowling. Quaife was 20 minutes without scoring. Lilley got to work steadily. When ho had scored 10 he was missed by Trumble in the slips off Noble. The field closed in when Quaife faced Noble, but ho stonewalled and drove one ball over their heads to the boundary. At IS6 Trumble got Lilley leg-before. Trumble’s last 12 overs yieldod soven runs for 3 wickets.

When Braund went in Armstrong roplaced Noble. Braund quickly got into double figures. Tho second century took three hours forty-five minutes. The score mounted steadily, chiefly from Braund.

At 220 Trumper replaced Armstrong, and shortly afterwards Howell gavo Trumble a spell. McLeod relieved Trumper. Quaife kept at slow, chanceless batting for two hours, while Braund played in dashing stylo. The fielding was brilliant. The scores were :

Englishmen —First Innings. McLaren, run out ... ... ... 67 Hayward, run out 90 Tyldesley, c and b Trumble 0 Quaife, not out 51 Jessop, c Trumper, b Trumble ... 1 Lilley, Ibw, b Trumble 10 Braund, not out ... 35 Extras 12 Total for five wickets 266 Trumble has taken three wickets for seventy-four.
