Frederick Pegram, a well-known artist, has been commissioned for a bust of the late Sir John McKenzie for the New Zealand Parliamentary Library. King Edward, when inspecting and God-speeding the brigade of twelve hundred men selected from the Guards regiments, embarking for South Africa, said he trusted their duties would be less arduous than of those previously sent to the front, and hoped the war would come to a speedy end. The Trades Union Co-operative Conference recommended Imperial taxation as the sole source of old age pensions, giving five shillings per week to every citizen aged 60. A blue-book published dealing with Anglo-American negotiations regarding the Isthmian Canal, ■ shows that Lord Lansdowue in proposing a modification of Mr Say’s version, in order to secure a treaty which would be accepted by both countries, as equitable and satisfactory, emphasised the desire to facilitate an enterprise wherein both Governments were greatly interested. Both the late President McKinley and Mr Hay assured Mr Pauncefote that they regarded the consideration shown to the American proposals in the highest degree friendly and reasonable. Mr Hay further expressed appreciation of Great Britain’s friendly and magnanimous spirit. The Times, commenting on the matter, rejoices that the first important treaty “ Edward, King of the British dominions beyond the Seas ” signed is a happy agreement with our kinsmen in the United States. Melbourne, Jan. 16. In the House of Representatives Mr Barton stated that the Federal Government, acceding to the request of Colonel Williams to return to South Africa, asked if a field hospital and equipment of the detachment with medical corps was required. The Imperial Government replied that they would be glad to accept. Therefore they intended to despatch a field hospital, equipped and mounted accordingly-
