"WATER AND DRAINAGE.
(To the Editor of the Times.)
Sir, —Mr Lysnar ought surely to be knighted on Coronation Day, for I am sure that if Gisborne people have any regard for the health of their town he will be benighted on the 22nd. He complains that the subject has resolvod itself into one of Lysnar v. Mestayer. Certainly he is striving to make it so. Mr Lysnar heads the triple alliance of those who are trying to prevent Gisborne being supplied i with water and drainage—Mr Tharratt I gave the show away by saying that it was their pockets they were thinking of. On the other hand Mr Mestayer, though perhaps a tyro at engineering compared to Mr Lysnar, is backed up by the other engineers. Mr Lysnar’s famous Waimata scheme may be compared to a lawsuit. It would cost much at the start, but when it camo to the endless pumping then would the troubles commence. The people of Gisborno have the breakwater to warn them against heeding amateur engineers. As a destructive critic Mr Lysnar had his value, but whon ho applied his ingenuity to devising a water supply scheme of his own he tickles the risible faculties. —I am, etc., „ _ De Lesseps. Re Waihirere Water Supply. (To the Editor of the Times.) Sir,—l should like to ask the Borough Council what the settlors on tho flat, are going to do for water when the Waihirere source is cut off ? Thero are several freeholders and eight leaseholders on the domain who are dependent upon this sourco of supply, and as their interests will have to be considered, it is as well that the matter is brought up before tho poll is taken, otherwise it will mean endless litigation in the future. The Waihirere is a natural water way, and has been used by tho settlers for many years. I am not opposed to tho Borough loan proposals, but I see ahead, and some steps should be taken to prevent numorous claims being made by settlers on the Council. Have tho settlers been approachod on the matter ?—I am, etc., Old Settler.
