The Governor has remitted the remainder of tho sentence passed on William Graham, triad at New Plymouth in September, 1900, and convicted of indecent assault. The remission took effect as from Now year’s Day. With a' view to stimulating traffic between New. Zealand and Australia, the freight rates on bran and oats to Melbourne and Sydney have been reduced to 10s and 12s per ton respectively. Christchurch, last night.

William B. Payton, a middle-aged man, pleaded to making a false entry when registering the birth and death of an illegitimate child born in his house. Tho Presbytery, on the motion of the Rev. K. R. M. Sutherland, seconded by Mr E. B. Cargill, unanimously resolved that the Presbytery have no sympathy with tho veiled but unmistakeable proBoorism of the acting-editor of the Outlook, and express deep regret that he should use his position to write what he must have known would have been an offence to his readers and would misrepresent the churches whose organ the Outlook is.

-Mr Boguo, in company with the Engi-neer-in-Chief, inspected the proposed sites of the railway bridge across the Hokitika river for tho Ross fine yesterday. A meeting of citizens has arranged an elaborate reception to the visiting fire brigade delegates next March, including a pyrotechnic display, church parade, banquet, ball, aquatic and driving excursions.
