EIGHTH CONTINGENT.

Wellington, last night. Lieutenancies in the Eighth Contingent have been given to Messrs Manson, Morris, and Foster. Morris was instructor to tho Hawke’s Bay members of the Third and Fourth, and was a member of the Eocruiting Board of the Eighth. Foster was a member of the hirst, in which he became a sergeant. Two vcterinai'y surgeons havo boon appointed Mr A.. It. Young for the South Island J3attalion, and Mr Clayton for the North Island Battalion. Messrs Birt and Co., owners of the Cornwall and Surrey, have contracted to carry tho Eighth Contingent to Capetown at tho following rates :—Officers .£3O, men JEIO, horses JEIS ; also to erect horsestalls and fit out men’s quarters freo of charge, and to provide water and fodder, etc. The Premier anticipates that the Contingent will leave New Zealand on tho 25th inst.

A CHAPLAIN WANTED.

Dunedin, last night.

At the meeting of tho Presbytery today, tho question of sending a chaplain with the Eighth Contingent was referred to. A similar application had been made in tho case of tho Fourth Contingent, but permission wa3 refused at the eleventh hour. The Rev. Tcnncnt said ho had spokon to Colonel Eobin, who assured him that a chaplain would be able to get about, and would bo welcomed ; in fact, Canadian and English chaplains were already goingabout. On a rough estimate, A 550 would covor tho expense, and the Eov. Tennont said ho thought they should call for volunteers. If no one clso camo forward, iio would go himself, if sent, though being 53 years of age might bo against him. A committeo was sot up to tako tho matter in hand.

Twenty-nine candidates wero tested yosterday afternoon in riding, Majors McCrodio and "Winter conducting the examination. Fourteen men wore found to havo satisfied tho requirements of tho Eocruiting Board. They then sot their horses at tho rail fence, four failing to get . over. The mon havo still to undergo medical examination, arid it was decided to select fourteen provisionally. The following aro the men who woro chosen : ' ! oai'pboll, J. Wood, C. Williamson, B. T. xiannett, Dalton, E. Pascoo, Eyan, W. Brown, A. Boyd, W. Cooper, Eobson, T. Thomson, Morris, and Humphroy. Tho men assembled last evening for medical examination. Tiioso finally solocted leave by the Mararoa for tho camp at Wellington. The ten mon for the supplementary list for tho Soventh Contingent, now sorving in South Africa, woro selected last evening, and are as follows: Arthur Boyd, age 21, hoight sft Blin, chest 354 in, weight list. William Brown, 20, sft 91 ft, 36in, list 41b.
