1 (Special to Times.) Auckland, last night. j Mr 11. E. Partridge’s Maori gallery of . paintings, by Lindauer, has been largely , patronised of late. The lives of Gisborne [ Maoris in the gallery have already been published in the Gisborne Times. Biographical sketches are given of the Sno . old New Zealand native warriors, sages, and chieftains, whose lineaments are preserved in oil in this gallery. Partridge’s collection of Maori portraits is unrivalled in the world. It gives visitors from abroad as well as colonists an cxcelient idea of the native people of the old school. The dignified rangatiras and warriors, chiefs who have nearly all passed to the reinga, the underworld of death. Another very few years will see the last of the tattooed old chiefs who are surviving types of this splendid savage race. Among the Gisborne warriors’ portraits in the gallery are those of Major Ropata Wahawaha, Henaro Potae, Ruka Aratapu, Hon. .J. Carroll, and Wi King!. In the visitors’ book Mr Carroll writes: “A charming group of pictures, representing our most celebrated Maori chiefs who figured prominently in the history of the colony.” The names of several Gisborne visitors to Auckland lately appear in the visitors’ book. One writes : “ Truly realistic paintings of historic value. The originals only require to be known ; then the paintings v/ould be doubly appreciated.” Another Gisbornite writes : “ As one who knows the Gisborne natives personally-, only real life itself could surpass them.” Gisboruites visitiDg Auckland should not fail to visit Partridge’s Maori collection in Queen street.
