Major Winter returned from Wairoa yesterday, where he had been inspecting the volunteers in camp. $ At the Bowling Club’s concert this evening short speeches will be given by Messrs Matthewson, Harding, and Bright. The first-named is President of the Northern Bowling Association, but will be unable to be present at the tournament. Mr W. Pettie, President of tho Gisborne Bowling Club, left for Auckland by the Warrimoo on Saturday. He proceeds by way of Onehunga and New Plymouth to Wellington, reaching the latter place in time to welcome the local representatives. Mr Pettie will remain in .Wellington during tournament week. The Eev. Canon Webb has been appointed assistant curate to Itcv. T. J. Wills, who has for some time been indisposed. At present, the Canon is officiating on Sundays at the Napier Cathedral.
Mr W. Hosking, a member of the Auckland Bowling Club, was a passenger by the Te Anau yesterday. The Auckland rinks at the forthcoming tournament will be skipped by Messrs Towsey and Culpan. Mr J. J. Holland returned to Gisborne by the Te Anau yesterday, Mr G. Humphreys left for Wellington last evening, and will be one of the Gisborne representatives at the bowling tournament. Mr H. Brookman, of the firm of Messrs Hudson and Co., Dunedin, is at present visiting Gisborne. iHe returns South on Wednesday. Mr F. Teat returned from Auckland yesterday. Delamere, tho well-known Hawke’s Bay footballer, who scored two tries in the match against Poverty Bay last season, arrived from Napier on Saturday morning, and intends taking up his residence here. ' The Hon. J. Carroll is still in Gisborne. He will leave on Wednesday next. Mr L. Nolan, of Messrs A. Clark and Sons’ local staff, has been transferred to the New Plymouth branch. He left for Auckland yesterday, and, after remaining a month there, proceeds to New Plymouth. His place will be taken by Mr Fararn. Mr Webbe, manager of the London and Berlin Piano Company, Shortland street, Auckland, arrived by the Te Anau yesterday afternoon. We are pleased to learn that Mr D. Jamison is steadily regaining his health. Mr Burnett, late purser of the Waikare, has been transferred to the Waihora.
Inspector Pender, who will retire on April 1, has been in the New Zealand police force for within three months of 40 years, A big deputation is to wait on Mr John Duthie, and ask him to contest the Wellington Mayoralty. The chief clerks of the various Departments of the Civil Service, have been ap- ! pointed a committee to carry out the necessary arrangements for making'a presentation to Mr T. H. Hamer, private secretary to the'Premier, on his departure on"a trip to the Old Country.
