MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

Yesterday— {Before Mr W. A. Barton. S.M.) THE LICENSING ACT. John Thompson Carr, for being on licensed premises during the currency of a prohibition order against him, was fined £3, costs 7s, in default 14 days. Robert Moody Henderson, for being disorderly and refusing to leave licensed premises, was fined £2, costs 7s, in default seven davs.

ALLEGED ASSAULT. A native named Matti Hare was charged with assaulting Frank Dean at Te Arai. Mr Jones appeered for the defence. Sergeant Siddells applied for a further remand, as the doctor considered it was inadvisable to bring the injured man before the Court at present. The application was granted. ~ ALLEGED CRUELTY TO ANIMALS Frank Rhodes and William Charles Campbell were charged with cruelly torturing a cow at Haiti by performing a certain operation on the animal. Mr W. D. Lysnar, for defendants, admitted the operation had been performed. The contention was that the cow should have been destroyed without having to undergo the pain of the operation, a°s it was a brutal and unnecessary one. A good deal of evidence was taken as to the nature of the operation, Mr C. R. Neale, Government Veterinary Surgeon giving the chief evidence for the police. ’ After hearing the witnesses for the defence His Worship dismissed the case, considering that the least painful method had been adopted to relieve the cow.
