Unimproved Values.
(By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, last night. A petition for taking a poll on the question of rating on unimproved values, presented to tho Southland County Council, is signed by over 800 persons. A poll should be taken within 11 days of presentation, but most of the returning officers are teachers now on holiday, and the Council applied for an Order-in-Council fixing the poll for March Ist. The cost of the poll, it is said, would be £3OO, and Councillors generally expressed the opinion that petitioners had a hazy idea of what they wanted, evidently’ expecting that a change in the incidence of taxation would relieve them, which was doubtful.
