DESERTERS. (Special to Times.) Wellington, last night. Two foreign seamon deserted from the ship Machrihanish last October, shortly after tho arrival of the vessel from Glasgow, and thereby rendered the master liablo to a a tax of HIOO under tho Immigration Restriction Act. Ono of the men, a Russian named Simon Dattison, was arrested on Saturday. He caino before tho Magistrate’s Court this morning, on a charge of desertion. lie pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to a month’s hard labor, on the understanding that if the vessel sails before the expiration of that time he will he placed on hoard.
