Captain Ross, of the Scottish Horse, had an interview with the Premier yesterday on the question of raising recruits in New Zealand if required. Mr Seddon told him lie was prepated to send as many men as wanted, hut they must go as a New Zealand contingent. Captain Ross thereupon decided to discontinue his recruiting mission.
An enquiry was held to-day into the circumstances of the grounding of the Rotorua at French Pass. The Collector of Customs does not consider a Magisterial enquiry necessary. Harold Johnson was charged at the Magistrate’s Court this morning with stealing £258 from the Christchurch Direct Importing Company on December 3. John Guillemot was charged with receiving £IOO in casli of this amount, with £SB 7s lud in cheques, knowing the same to he dishonestly obtained. Both pleaded guilty, and were remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence.
