REQUEST FROM IMPERIAL 1 GOVERNMENT, A THOUSAND MEN TO BE SENT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, Dee. 22. Barton lias received a cable from Mr Chamberlain, stating that in view of the prolongation of hostilities in South ; Africa, tho Imperial Government will be ! glad to accept the services of a Commoui wealth Contingent to tho number of a i thousand, preference to be given to men ] who havo previously served in South i Africa, the Commonwealth to supply i horses, saddlery, and uniforms, and the 1 Imperial Government repaying the cost jof transport. It has been arranged with | tho War Office that the poriod of service bo one year or tho duration of the war.
Mr Barton replied that he would gladly provide a contingent, and that the States would hnvo been prepared to meet the demand for a larger number if asked for.
