ROWING.

POVERTY BAY ROWING CLUB. Last evening the first heat of the Poverty Lay Rowing Club s toial fours, for photospresented by Mr B. Cox, was rowed over the mile and a-quarter course on theTaruheru river.

The competing crews were : R. Jones fstr), H. Williams (3), T. Nicholson (2), H. Smith (bow), and H. Burns (str), F. McGovern (3), B. Power (2), W. Lewis (bow). From a good start Burns’ crew soon had a lead of half a length, but when the mile post was reached Jones’ had got on even terras. Little alteration took place until passing the bridge, which Burns’ crew had the misfortunate to strike with their oars, thereby losing over a length At the Gasworks corner both crews were again level, but one of Burns’ men catching a crab, gave -Jones’ a slight advantage, which he maintained to the finish, winning by a length. This evening crews stroked by J. Smith and J. Pool meet, and a good race should result.

Members intending to compete in the double sculling races, for which Mr W. West has presented a handsome pair of carved walking sticks, are requested to leave their names with the Secretary (Mr W. Fraser) this evening.
