AUCKLAND SPECIAL.

HOLIDAY VISITORS. (Special to Times.) Auckland, last, night. Visitors from the country and coastal ports are coming t) the city very freely at present, a large number arriving yesterday from Gisborne, Tauranga, Thames, and other places. Tho Waihora, which arrived from Napier and Gisborne yesterday, had a full passenger list in both classes, and various coastal boats were also fully patronised. A large number of visitors are. expected for tho A.R.C. races. I noticed many Gisborne faces in the city to-day. MOTU TIMBER. Mr Kensington, of the Crown Land? Department, Auckland, who was commissioned by the Government to prepare estimates of the quantity of timber contained in the Motu bush, between Gisborno and Opotiki, took two months in a thorough survey of the bush, the area covered being 200,000 acres. The prevailing wood was found to he rimu, kahikatea and matai being also in plentiful supply. The average of tho timber was about 4000 feet tothe acre, solid contents, or 45,000 feetsuperficial measurement.

EIGHTH CONTINGENT. A number of returned troopers who arrived at Wellington by tho Elingamite, have stated that they are quite ready to go back again. The men of our Sixth and Seventh Contingents say that they found some of the First Contingent’s horses still at work. They add that if an eighth contingent is sent away it should be served with good horses, as there is a scarcity of remounts, and the horses at present in use; are stale from over work. SOLICITOR AND MEMBER. Mr T. K. Sidey. elected yesterday to represent Caversham, Otago, is a solicitor by profession. NATIVE LANDS.

A special wire from Wellington statesthat Hone Heke, member for the Northern Maori District, is busily engaged in settling several matters affecting native land claims dealt with in the " washing up ” bill of last session. The claims are tolands in the East Coast of the North Island, Waikato proper, Hokianga, and: other districts north of Auckland.
