EIGHTH COUNTINGENT.

By ieiegruph Press Association. Palmerston North, last night. Seventy-five applications have so far been received for enrolment in the Eighth Contingent here. Wellington, last night. The number of appiicati s received up to the present for the 1 ,Laces in the Contingent allotted to ‘ .iiugton is 257. including 25 returned ,p,< V .iu last night. Over 50 applieatL aav been received here for the 20 alio it tWanganui in the Eighth t ontiuqmt. Of tne applications, ten are returned troopers, and it is anticipated at least another ten will apply, so that the mounted men in this district will have no chance of being represented. There is a very strong feeling here that Wanganui's quota is entirely out of proportion to the numberof men to be raised, more especially in viewing the fact that the Wanganui district in the past has supplied as many rneu as Wellington Another contingents. Wanganui has 14 corps, representing 1000 men, including seven mounted corps to choose from, and yet, under the present conditions, the chances of providing a solitary representative is very remote. LARGE NUMBERS OF APPLICATIONS IN' AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph—press Association.) Auckland, last night.

Up to this afternoon about three hundred and twenty applications had been received at tlie Auckland brigade office for enlistment in the Eight Contingent. These are all from Auckland. The country lists are not in yet.
