THURSDAY COMPETITION. Whataupoko and Kaiti met on No. 1 pitch on the Domain yesterday. The weather was warm, and rain threatened all the afternoon, but held off'. Whataupoko batted first, and put up the respectable total of 100. Haworth played a tine innings for 26, and proved himself a batsman of a good deal moro than average ability. 110 made one grand stroke to leg off Seymour, for which six was run. Hodge (19), Tattersall (16), and Rowland and J. Ferris (10 each) also batted well. Seymour was the most successful bowler for Kaiti, and got a lot of work on from the off. Ho captured five wickets. Lyttleton also bowled well. The fielding of the Kaiti men was very feeble. Kaiti, on going to the wickets, made a miserable stand against the bowling of Hodge and 11. Ferris. The first six wickets only produced 10 runs, and it was not until young Gordon Witty went in that the runs came. The colt hit clean and hard, and pasted the loose bowling all over the field. He was eventually out lbw. to Tattersall, after putting up a fine score of 80. G. Crawford (11) hit hard for his runs, and was the only other man to reach double figures. Tho innings olosed for 60, leaving Whataupoko victorious by 40 rune. H. Ferris and liodgo did most destruction with tho ball for Whataupoko, and both bowled well. MeCredic was smart and clever behind the sticks, and stumped Porter like a Lilley. The following are the scores : WHATAOPOKOr*
WEST END V. CITY. West End and City met on No. 2 wicket, and the game ended in favor of City by 26 runs. West End batted first, and totalled 51. McConnell was the only batsman to show anything lilco form, and played a fine, free innings for his score of 21. Lewis was the destructive element with the ball for City, though G. C. Johnstone and Loomb also did good work. City then took strike, and were all out for 77 on call of time. Sheridan (23, not out), Shillabeer (13), and Pine (10) were the principal run-getters. The former in particular batted well, and is developing into a promising batsman. W. Andrews bowled well for West End, and took tho bulk of the wickets. Tho following are the scores :
During the progress of the play, a Hock of close on 4000 sheep were driven on to thz ground, and considerable amusement was caused as the woolly quadrupeds encircled the players. The fieldsmen had frequently to chase the ball through the iiock, while the crowd “ chaffed ” immoderately. Mr W. Miller, the Hon. Treasurer of the Cricket Association, showed that he possessed considerable knowledge as a drover, and did good work in shepherding the sheep off the field of play. They should greatly improve the outfield.
The West End eleven proceeds to Ormond to-morrow to play County in the senior shield fixture. United and City meet on Victoria Domain to-morrow. United team: Hill, Porter, Gibson, Seymour, Lyttleton, PI. Ferris, McCredie, J. M. Gouldsmith, J. Ferris, Witty, and Clare.
