Southland Metropolitan Show
By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, last night. There was beautiful weather for the first day of the Southland Metropolitan A. and P. Show, entries for which exceed all previous ones by 62. The sheep and cattle were judged to-day, the chief awards in the former being:— Border Leicesters: Champion ram, J. McCrosbie; ewe, MeKercher Bros. English Leicester: Champion ram and ewe, A. Murdoch. Romney: Ram and ewe, J. Gardiner. Lincoln: P.am, G. Sutton; ewe, J. B. Suttton. In Shropshires, J. S. Grieve and T. Evans divided awards. Cheviots, Holder and Awdrey, champion ram and ewe, and Holmes' Trustees were other prize-takers. There was a good show of fat sheep, and W. S. F. Fleming took most prizes. Cattle : Champion Shorthorn ■J. and T. Carswell only entry. The other prize-takers: A. Heaven, G. Anderson, and Holmes’ Trustees. Polled Arngus, champion bull, Holmes: Trustees; cow, W. Officer. The former took most of the awards. Herefords : .James Holmes took championship and all firsts. Jersey ; First awards went mostly to A. Quertier. Ayrshires were a fine show. William Rankin and -James Galt being'the principal prize-takers, The former showed the champion bull. As the weather nromises to be fine, a big attendance is expected on People's Day. An amusing incident was the judging by mistake of the Government bull sent for exhibition only, which was badly beaten by the local , stock.
